GU to launch courses in 7 international languages

If learning a foreign language is on your wish list, here is good news. Gujarat University has announced that it will launch certificate and diploma courses in French, German, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Chines and Japanese.

The first phase will begin in June when three-month and six-month courses will be launched in French, German, Greek and Spanish. The one-year diploma course and the courses in three other languages will be launched in the second phase.

“These courses will be taught at the international language laboratory that has been set up at the study abroad department’ in GU campus. The laboratory has audio-visual equipment and 60 students can be accommodated in the class. There is also a speech curriculum module where students will practice the language,” said the vice-chancellor of Gujarat University, Parimal Trivedi.

Language laboratory has been set up using Rs 40 lakh of the Rs 223 lakh grant provided by the state government on April 2. The university is eyeing current students, business professional and foreign nationals. More…

Gujarat earthquake brings mobile hospitals

Soon the country will have mobile hospitals which would be airlifted to areas hit by natural disasters or terror attacks. After the devastating earthquake in Gujarat the need for such self sufficient hospitals was felt and the Central government has prepared such mobile hospitals for five different zones of the country.

These self-sufficient mobile hospitals, having 200 beds, an intensive care unit (ICU), a laboratory, and a blood bank, would start functioning soon after reaching a site struck by either a man-made or a natural disaster. One mobile hospital would cost Rs. 300 million, Shakti Gupta, the member of the steering committee of the National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC) under the Home Ministry, Monday said.

The hospitals could be air-lifted to any part of the country within two hours and start functioning soon after reaching the area. “The need for mobile hospital was first felt during the Gujarat earthquake of 2001. The need for this service was also felt as over 3,000 health facilities had been destroyed, which made it difficult to provide medical aid to the injured,” Gupta said at the launch of the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s campaign – ‘Save Lives, Make Hospitals Safe in Emergencies’ on the occasion of World Health Day 2009.

The Home Ministry had initially given an order for two such mobile hospitals, but then raised the number to five which would be placed in five different zones of India — east, west, south, north and centre.

“The plan was approved soon after the Gujarat earthquake. When Gujarat saw a series of terror attack, including in a hospital (in July 2008), it was realized that these mobile hospitals could be of great help in providing health facilities even during a terror strike and not just during earthquakes or floods,” he added.

Doctors at these mobile hospitals are geared to carry out emergency services, including surgeries, and the hospital will also have medicines and necessary equipments to carry out any medical tests. More…..

Gujarat to get Rs.3,500-crore ‘Education City’

New Delhi-based infrastructure developer Anant Raj Industries will set up an “Education City” at Mehsana, about 90 km from here, on an investment of Rs.3,500 crore, the company said on Monday.

The township project, which is to come up on 750 acres, will have universities, colleges and schools besides multiplexes, service apartments, hostels, auditoriums and hotels, company executive director Amit Sarin said in a statement. The project will be completed in three phases over two years, with the first phase taking off in about two months, Sarin said.

Universities and colleges will be allocated between 10 to 20 acres for developing infrastructure at Mehsana Education City, Sarin said, adding that his company has begun contacting institutions in this regards. The company is in the process of developing special economic zones (SEZs), IT parks, hotels, commercial complexes, malls, residential projects, service apartments and infrastructural facilities across the country, he said. Over 17,000 English medium teachers roped in for paper assessment

They have contacted 17000 teachers from English medium to check 45 lakh class x answer sheets. Read the complete news below. Over 17,000 English medium teachers have been called by Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) for assessing 45 lakh class X answer sheets beginning from Wednesday. GSHSEB has faced flak in the past for not being able to bring in enough English medium teachers to check answersheets, thereby leading to delayed results.

It has also battled controversial allegations that Gujarati medium teachers were given the job of checking answer sheets as many English medium teachers had not turned up for assessment. But, this year GSHSEB held a meeting with 500 principals of English medium schools and directed them to compulsorily send teachers for assessment to avoid any injustice to students. Teachers from non-grant-in-aid schools, who have taught for two years and more, have also been called for checking and if any teacher does not fulfil the task, board has warned of punitive action against them. “School principals have agreed to provide all support and we are expecting adequate number of teachers to come for the assessment job,” said GSHSEB official, VM Vyas. This year, after adding a new assessment centre at Rajkot, teachers from Saurashtra will not have to come to Ahmedabad for assessment. “We expect assessment work of class X to be over by April 9,” Vyas said.

Studying at IIM-A gets costlier, fee up by Rs 1L

It will be more costly for stundets to study in IIM-A now. Read the news I found at times of India website. The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on Sunday increased the fee of its flagship Post Graduate Programme from Rs 11.5lakh to Rs 12.5lakh annually, citing rising cost of teaching. With the increase, the institute has more than doubled its fee in the past one year. It had increased the fee from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 11.5 lakh in 2008. ”The hike will be applicable to the batch of 2009-11. Students will have to pay Rs 6 lakh for the first year and Rs 6.5 lakh in the second year. The institute is continuing the subsidy scheme but may introduce minor changes,” said director Samir Barua after the meeting of the board of governors on Sunday. IIM-Calcutta, too, more than doubled its fee in February, to Rs 9 lakh for students joining the institute this year. The fee for IIM-Bangalore is Rs 9.5 lakh. There’s a proposal to increase the fee from Rs 5 lakh to about Rs 7 lakh at IIM-Lucknow.

The increase in fee comes at a time when IIM-A is at loggerheads with the Centre over attempts to curtail its autonomy. The decision was taken by the board of governors. IIM-A has been fighting a tug-of-war with the central HRD ministers since 2004, first over fee hike with Murli Manohar Joshi when the NDA was in power and then with Arjun Singh over OBC quota when the UPA came to power. ”Although, the Central government members on our board weren’t present during the meeting, we had sent them the agenda in advance,” Barua said. ”I have not received any objection to the hike so far.” Management Development Programmes, the main source of income for IIMs, have seen a huge downturn in the second half of the academic year of 2008-09. The placement fee charged from companies participating in campus placements has also come down. Barua said, ”By the time the 2009 batch passes out in 2011, recession is expected to fade out and students will get competitive jobs, with which it will not be difficulty for them to pay their loans. Also, in comparison to other business schools in the country, this fee is not very high.” The hike is also seen as an attempt by the institute to replenish its depleting corpus. Barua said the corpus was Rs 130 crore till construction of the new campus began. ”Now we are left with Rs 50 crore,” he said.

CEPT to start two e-courses in April

Ahmedabad-based CEPT University will introduce two e-courses for professionals from this April. The courses are in Urban Infrastructure Planning (UIP), and Environment Impact Assessment (EIA).

These certificate courses are structured in 12 modules and will be delivered via the Internet in 16 weeks. These web-based courses are targeted at middle level management professionals aspiring for higher qualification while on the job.

CEPT has organised the UIP online course under the capacity building initiative of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. This will be of great help to officers, engineers, city development authorities, NGOs and the municipalities, according to Saswat Bandhyopadhyay, Course Director, CEPT University.

The EIA course is a joint initiative of CEPT, the World Bank’s South Asia Environment Cell, and the Centre for Environment Education. The course will be open to candidates from Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh as well.

During the course, students can avail the facility of Web-chat with the faculty members, twice a month. There will be regular weekly assignments and every student will be required to submit a ‘Final Thesis’ at the end of the 16 week period.

The eligibility criterion requires the candidate to be a graduate in any discipline with a minimum 50 per cent marks or a diploma with a minimum of two years work experience. The fee for the entire course has been fixed at Rs 15,000. More…

Banking to cover 100% Gujarat homes by April

By April 15, not a single household covered under the last census in Gujarat will be left without a bank account. The state is all set to achieve 100 per cent financial inclusion with banks providing banking facilities to each household.

Sources said Gujarat will be the fourth state, and the most populous one, to achieve 100 per cent financial inclusion after Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

Banks in Gujarat have so far opened 95.63 lakh banks accounts, covering 97 per cent households with basic banking service. Out of 26 districts, households in 24 districts have already been fully covered by banks. Ahmedabad and Surat are the two districts where coverage stands at 96 per cent as of now.

“We are striving to achieve 100 per cent target before the middle of April,” said Mukesh Kumar Jain, general manger, Dena Bank, and convenor of State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC). There are in all 5,672 branches of banks in the state covering the population of just over five crore.

Based on the 2001 census, there were over 96.91 household, of which 53.45 lakh household were not covered under banking facilities. “All banks together have covered almost all the households under a drive launched in January 2006,” Jain added. In November 2005, the Reserve Bank of India had announced a series of measures to include poorest of poor in the banking net and to free them from the clutches of unscrupulous money-lenders. Convenor banks of the SLBCs were given the responsibility of reaching 100 per cent financial inclusion.

The objective of the financial inclusion is to give benefits of all kind banking service to the people at affordable cost by opening bank accounts. Banking sources said that postal saving accounts are also covered under the drive. More…..

ITIs go into auto’ mode, 16 Nano-specific courses set for launch

Looks like Nano has sparked interest in vocational education. Students currently giving class X board exams are hoping to get admission in the 16 new courses to be introduced in May by five Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).

“I hope to get good marks so that I can make it to one of the ITIs offering courses for Nano. I have started learning driving as well. I stay in Bavla and it would be great if I can get a job in Sanand which will not require me to relocate,” says Suresh Patel.

The overwhelming response world’s smallest car has received in terms of bookings, has raised hopes of a job boom fuelled by the Tatas. Says another class X student from Sanand, Mukesh Khatri, “I was planning to pursue engineering by appearing for HSC exams. Now, I think I will opt for a Nano-specific course.”

The courses will have duration of one or two years and those who have completed class X will be eligible. Sources say the syllabus will be specified by the Tatas depending on the kind of skilled labour they will need. ITIs will endorse that syllabus and train students who can take up jobs pronto.

At first, 60 students will be enrolled in each course. As per this arrangement, there will be a workforce of nearly 1,300-1,500 youth available with skills specific to the needs of Nano.

ITIs in Sanand, Kubernagar, Sarkhej, Viramgam and Gandhinagar will start courses on auto-mechanics, auto-electric, auto-painter, mechatronics, robotics, CNC machine-operating, automobile casting, freezing and treatment, among others. More….

ગુજરાતીમાં ટાઈપ કરવા માટે ઈન્ડીક IME નો ઉપયોગ

માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ઓફિસ ૨૦૦૩ સ્યુટમાં ઈન્ડીક ભાષાઓમાં ટાઈપ કરવાને ટેકો અપાયેલો હોવાથી, જે ભારતીય ભાષાઓને ટેકો અપાયો છે, તેમાંથી કોઈ પણ ભાષા દ્વારા યુઝર ટાઈપ કરી શકે છે. અત્યારે માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ૨૦૦૩ દ્વારા જેનો ઉપયોગ શક્ય છે, તે ભાષાઓ છે, હિન્દી, ગુજરાતી, કન્નડ, મલયાલમ, તમિલ અને બંગાળી. કોઈ પણ ભારતીય લિપિની મુખ્ય ખાસિયત હોય છે તેનાં જટિલ અક્ષરો અને ચિહ્નો, અને તેને ઈન્ડીક IME વડે, એટલે કે ઈન્પુટ મેથડ એડીટર વડે ટાઈપ કરવાની પધ્ધતિ એકસરખી હોય છે.

ઈન્પુટ મેથડ એડીટર (જેને ઈન્પુટ મેથડ એન્વાયર્મેન્ટ પણ કહેવાય છે), એ એક એવો પ્રોગ્રામ છે, અથવા તો એક ઓપરેટીન્ગ સિસ્ટમ કોમ્પોનન્ટ છે, કે જેના દ્વારા કમ્પ્યુટર યુઝર્સ સામાન્ય પાશ્ચાત્ય કીબોર્ડ વાપરીને જ આ જટિલ અક્ષરો અને ચિહ્નો ટાઈપ કરી શકે છે. (જાપાનીઝ, ચાઈનીઝ, તિબેટીઅન અને કોરીઅન અક્ષરો પણ ઈન્ડીક અક્ષરો જેવાં જ જટિલ છે.)

જો યુઝરને હિન્દી, ગુજરાતી, કન્નડ, મલયાલમ, તમિલ કે બંગાળી જેવી ભારતીય ભાષામાં ટાઈપ કરવું હોય, તો તે માટે IME, એ માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ઓફિસ પ્રોડક્ટ્સના ક્ષેત્રના કાર્યોમાંનું એક મહત્વનું કોમ્પોનન્ટ છે. માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ઓફિસમાં કામ કરનારા કોઈ પણ યુઝરને આમાંની કોઈ પણ ભાષામાં ટાઈપ કરવું હોય, તો તે તેમને ક્યાં તો માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ઓફિસની CD ઉપર મળશે અથવા તો માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ભાષાઈન્ડીયા પોર્ટલના એન્ડ-યુઝર્સ (End users) વિભાગમાંની ડાઉનલોડ લીન્ક દ્વારા મળશે.

અન્ય ભારતીય ભાષાઓની સરખામણીમાં ગુજરાતી હજી તરુણ હોવાં છતાં, તેનો ઉપયોગ બહોળા પ્રમાણમાં થાય છે. દુનિયામાં જુદી જુદી જગ્યાએ થઈને, ભારત અને વિદેશમાં વસતા ગુજરાતી-ભાષીઓની સંખ્યા ૫ કરોડથી પણ વધારે છે. કમ્પ્યુટર પર વિન્ડોઝ XP પ્લેટફોર્મ ઉપર, ગુજરાતીમાં ઓફિસ-બેઝ્ડ કાર્યો ચાલુ કરવા માટે, નીચે જણાવેલી સરળ રીત અનુસરો :

IME ના શક્ય ઉપયોગ માટે કમ્પ્યુટર પર ગુજરાતી IME ને આપવામાં આવેલો ‘સપોર્ટ’, એટલે કે આધાર, ચાલુ કરાયેલો હોવો જોઈએ. યુઝરે ‘કન્ટ્રોલ પેનલ’માં જઈને ‘રીજીયનલ લેન્ગવેજ ઓપ્શન્સ’ નામના બટન પર ક્લીક કરવાનું હોય છે. તેનાથી ટેબ-કી દ્વારા ત્રણ વિકલ્પ મળશે: રીજીયનલ ઓપ્શન્સ, લેન્ગવેજ અને એડવાન્સ્ડ. તેમાંના લેન્ગવેજ (Languages) ટેબને પસંદગી આપો. હવે એક ખાના આકારમાં ‘ઈન્સ્ટોલ ફાઈલ્સ ફોર કોમ્પ્લેક્ષ સ્ક્રીપ્ટ્સ એન્ડ લેફ્ટ-ટુ-રાઈટ લેન્ગવેજીસ (ઈન્ક્લુડીન્ગ થાઈ)’ લખેલું હોય, ત્યાં ખરાની નિશાની કરો અને પછી ‘એપ્લાય’ ઉપર ક્લીક કરો. હવે વિન્ડોઝ XP ની CD મૂકો અને બાકીનું સંચાલન પૂરું કરો.
ગુજરાતી IME ની ‘સેટ-અપ’ ફાઈલ ચલાવવી અને કમ્પ્યુટરને ‘રીસ્ટાર્ટ’ કરવું એટલે કે ફરીથી ચાલુ કરવું.
હવે પછી જે ભાષાની જરૂર હોય, તેને માટે કીબોર્ડના લેઆઉટને તૈયાર કરવાનું રહે છે. યુઝરે ‘કન્ટ્રોલ પેનલ’માં જઈને રીજીયનલ લેન્ગવેજ ઓપ્શન્સ નામના બટન પર ક્લીક કરવાનું હોય છે. તેમાંના જે ત્રણ ટેબ દેખાય છે, તેમાંથી લેન્ગવેજ ટેબને પસંદગી આપો. ત્યાર પછી ટેક્સ્ટ સર્વિસ અને ઈન્પુટ લેન્ગવેજ વિભાગમાંથી ‘ડીટેલ…’ દર્શાવતા બટન પર ક્લીક કરો. આ બટન ક્લીક કરીને, ઈન્પુટ લેન્ગવેજ તરીકે ગુજરાતીને પસંદ કરો અને કીબોર્ડ તરીકે ગુજરાતી ઉમેરો. હવે પસંદગી માટે ઉપલબ્ધ વિકલ્પોમાંથી ઈન્ડીક IME (V5.1) ને પસંદ કરો.
એકવાર ઈન્સ્ટોલેશન પૂરું થઈ જાય, પછી વર્ડપેડ કે નોટપેડ, કે પછી ઓફિસની કોઈ પણ એપ્લીકેશન ચાલુ કરો. હવે સ્ક્રીન પરની નીચેના પટ્ટા ઉપરના વિન્ડોઝ ટાસ્ક-બારમાં, જમણે છેડે રહેલા લેન્ગવેજ ઈન્ડીકેટર ઉપર ક્લીક કરો, અને તેમાંથી ખુલતા નાનકડા મેન્યુમાંથી ‘ઈન્ડીક ઈન્ડીક IME (V5.1)’ ને પસંદ કરો.
હવે ગુજરાતીમાં ટાઈપ કરવા માટે તમારું કમ્પ્યુટર તૈયાર છે.

ગુજરાતીનું ઈન્ડીક IME 1, પાંચ જાતના કીબોર્ડ સાથે આવે છે.

1. ગુજરાતી ટ્રાન્સલીટરેશન:
ફોનેટીક એટલે કે ધ્વન્યાત્મક રીતે ટાઈપ કરવાથી, યુઝર તેનું લખાણ સામાન્ય અંગ્રેજી કીબોર્ડ વાપરીને રોમન લિપિમાં ટાઈપ કરી શકે છે, અને તરત જ તેનું ટ્રાન્સલીટરેશન દ્વારા ગુજરાતી લિપિમાં રૂપાંતર થઈ જાય છે. આનો સંબંધ ધ્વન્યાત્મક પધ્ધતિનાં તર્ક સાથે હોય છે અને શબ્દ જે રીતે બોલાતો હોય, તે રીતે ટાઈપ કરવાથી આ બહુ અસરકારક રહે છે.

2. ગુજરાતી ટાઈપરાઈટર:
ટાઈપીંગ માટે વપરાતું આ એક બીજું કીબોર્ડ છે. ગુજરાતી ટાઈપરાઈટર કીબોર્ડના નકશા પ્રમાણે ટાઈપ કરી શકાય છે.

3. ગુજરાતી ઈન્સ્ક્રીપ્ટ:
આ એક એવું ગુજરાતી કીબોર્ડ છે, જ્યાં યુઝર મૂળ અક્ષરોને એક શ્રેણીમાં ટાઈપ કરે છે અને એક ખાસ તર્ક દ્વારા નક્કી થાય છે કે તેમાંનાં કયાં અક્ષરોને જોડવાં અને ગોઠવવાં, કે જેથી glyph ની રચના થાય.

4. ગુજરાતી ગોદરેજ ઈન્ડીકા:
આ એક એવું ગુજરાતી કીબોર્ડ છે કે જેમાં ગુજરાતી ગોદરેજ ઈન્ડીકા કીબોર્ડના નકશા પ્રમાણે ટાઈપ કરી શકાય છે.

5. ગુજરાતી રેમીન્ગટન ઈન્ડીકા:
આ એક એવું ગુજરાતી કીબોર્ડ છે કે જેમાં ગુજરાતી રેમીન્ગટન ઈન્ડીકા કીબોર્ડના નકશા પ્રમાણે ટાઈપ કરી શકાય છે.

6. ગુજરાતી સ્પેશીયલ કેરેક્ટર:
આ કીબોર્ડમાં ગુજરાતીમાં વપરાતા ખાસ સ્પેશીયલ અક્ષરોનો સમાવેશ કરવામાં આવ્યો છે.

ગુજરાતી IME દ્વારા મળતા આ જુદા જુદા ફીચર્સને લીધે, યુઝર માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ઓફિસના ઉપયોગથી ડૉક્યુમેન્ટ્સમાં એટલે કે દસ્તાવેજમાં, ગુજરાતીમાં ટાઈપની કોઈ પણ રીત વાપરીને બહુ સરળતાથી ટાઈપ કરી શકે છે.

ગુજરાતી IME માં ટાઈપ કરવાના કેટલાક મુદ્દા છે. ઈન્ડીક લિપિની જટિલતા અને તે તરફ ચાલુ રહેલો વિકાસ, તે બંન્ને જોતાં કેટલીક સાવચેતી જરૂરી છે અને IME નો ઉપયોગ કરવા માટે કેટલાક મુદ્દા યાદ રાખવા જરૂરી છે.

માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ એક્સેલમાં IME વાપરતી વખતે, લખાણ પછી સ્પેસ-બાર, એન્ટર-કી, કે ટેબ-કી દબાવ્યા પછી જ લખાણને જોઈ શકાય છે.
જ્યારે જાતે બનાવેલા વર્ડલિસ્ટની ખુલેલી વિન્ડો (બારી) બંધ થાય, પછી કમ્પ્યુટરના સ્ક્રીન ઉપર એક નાની વિન્ડો ખુલ્લી રહેશે.
માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ફ્રન્ટ પેજ અથવા માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ આઉટલુકના માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ કમ્પોઝ ના ઓપ્શનમાં જો ગુજરાતી લખાણ બહુ ઝડપથી ટાઈપ કરવામાં આવે, તો પ્રોગ્રામ ‘ક્રેશ’ થઈ શકે છે એટલે કે અટકી શકે છે. તેથી, ટાઈપીંગની ઝડપ સામાન્ય રાખવી પડશે.
માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ એક્સેલમાં ગુજરાતી લિપિ વાપરવાથી પ્રોગ્રામ ગમે ત્યારે ‘ક્રેશ’ થવાની શક્યતા ઘણી રહેલી છે. તેથી, ડેટાનો વારંવાર સંગ્રહ કરવો જોઈએ.
માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ફ્રન્ટ પેજમાં, અથવા માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ આઉટલુકના HTML મેઈલ ઓપ્શનમાં ગુજરાતી લિપિને અમલમાં મૂકવાથી, કામગીરી થોડી ધીમી થઈ જાય છે.
અંગ્રેજી કીબોર્ડ કે બીજા કોઈ પણ IME માં કીબોર્ડ બદલવા વખતે, ટાઈપ થયેલો છેલ્લો શબ્દ જો નહીં સચવાયો હોય, તો તેને ગુમાવવો પડશે.
માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ ફ્રન્ટ પેજમાં, અથવા માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ આઉટલુકના HTML કમ્પોઝ ઓપ્શનમાં, નવી લાઈન ઉમેરવા માટે ‘એન્ટર-કી’ને બે વખત દબાવવી પડશે.
જો કોઈ પણ લખાણ સચવાયા વગર (એટલે કે, સ્પેસ-બાર, એન્ટર-કી કે ટેબ-કી દબાવ્યા વગર), એરો-કી દબાવી હશે, તો તેની અસર મેળવવા માટે દરેક કી, બે વખત દબાવવી પડશે. જો લખાણ સચવાયેલું હશે, તો બધી કી સહેલાઈથી કામ કરશે.
જે ગુજરાતી અક્ષરો “શ્રુતિ” ફોન્ટમાં ઉપલબ્ધ ન હોય, તે ચોરસ બ્લોક જેવાં દેખાશે.
સ્વસ્તિક જેવાં ચિહ્નો, યુનીકોડ ની ખાસયિતમાં નથી.
માઈક્રોસોફ્ટ એક્સેલમાં ડેટા ટાઈપ કરવા માટે જો ‘વર્ચ્યુઅલ કીબોર્ડ’નો ઉપયોગ કર્યો હશે, તો અણધારી ભૂલો આવી શકે છે.
